Creating a bootable usb-drive from a boot cd image file

  1. Format your USB-Drive with FAT-32
  2. list your disks with diskutil list
$ diskutil list
/dev/disk0
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.3 GB   disk0
   1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk0s1
   2:          Apple_CoreStorage                         499.4 GB   disk0s2
   3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3
/dev/disk1
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD           *499.1 GB   disk1
                                 Logical Volume on disk0s2

                                 Unlocked Encrypted
/dev/disk2
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:     FDisk_partition_scheme                        *8.0 GB     disk2
   1:                 DOS_FAT_32 UNTITLED                8.0 GB     disk2s1
  1. find out the device path for your thumb drive. in our case /dev/disk2.
  2. unmount the disk with diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2.
  3. dump your image onto the disk ...or at least i think that's what it does ;)... that might take some time.
    $ sudo dd if=~/path/to/your.iso of=/dev/disk2 bs=1m
  4. finally eject the disk with diskutil eject /dev/disk2
